NTSA Director General Announces Intensified Road Crackdown as Schools Reopen

National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) Director-General George Njao announced an intensified enforcement of traffic rules across the country starting next week.

Speaking to the media on April 26, Njao indicated that law enforcement officers would be deployed on the roads to ensure that motorists complied with the rules.

He indicated that the measure was due to planned activities on the roads before the reopening of schools.

Furthermore, he expressed that the agency was ready to take action against motorists who do not comply with the established guidelines in a bid to protect students and other road users.

Primary and secondary schools are expected to resume their second semester on Monday, April 29.

On the other hand, he called on parents to plan their children’s trip in advance. He noted that there may be challenges for students as the rains continue.

“Our children are now returning to school from home. We will be present on the roads to ensure the safe passage of our children.

“We also ask parents to prepare our children’s trip so that children do not have difficulties when traveling,” the statement reads in part.

Meanwhile, schools are expected to have complied with the inspection order issued by Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen earlier this month.

Under the directive, all schools were required to take their buses and vans for a mandatory inspection by Tuesday, May 1.

“As public commitments on the Draft Traffic Rules (School Transport) 2024 progress, all educational institutions must submit their vehicles for inspection by May 1, 2024, to assess their mechanical soundness and whether the limiters of speed installed in them work.

“School vehicles transporting children are prohibited from circulating between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m.,” Murkomen said.

Separately, the NTSA is also engaging the public on rules that will guide the use of school buses and commercial vehicles such as trucks.
