With Liverpool in talks to appoint Arne Slot as their new boss, Sky Sports News Senior reporter Melissa Reddy explains how the Premier League’s financial rules and similarities to Jurgen Klopp led the Reds to make the Feyenoord head coach their top candidate…

Arne Slot has a strong track record of player development and exceeds his budget and resources compared to his rivals at both AZ Alkmaar and Feyenoord.

This is important when analyzing the football landscape and how it will change.

Feyenoord boss Arne Slot had an awkward exchange with Sky Sports News reporter Gary Cotterill when asked if he would take the Liverpool job.

We have seen the teeth of the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability rules, and with some clubs pushing for the introduction of “anchoring” and a strict salary cap, the importance of work on training grounds, the ability to attract talent young people and functioning well within the means will be more pronounced.

Under Fenway Sports Group, Liverpool has been run in a healthy and sustainable manner and it makes sense to hire a manager who can continue to maximize resources.

Most of the candidates considered by Liverpool ticked that box, but Slot’s approach and playing philosophy, which meshes so well with what Klopp has implemented at the club, set him apart.

Jamie Carragher believes Arne Slot may find it difficult to make the move from Feyenoord to Liverpool

It means there is no tactical upheaval or mass adaptation. Liverpool have a common vision and style of play across all age groups, which dictates the stylistic profile they recruit for, so it is sensible to continue with that.

The jump from the Eredivisie to a team that wants to win the Premier League and be a dominant force in Europe is huge, but any potential successor to Klopp comes with risk.

In numbers: Slot’s similarities with Klopp

Feyenoord coach Arne Slot gives an inspiring talk about the team after a great win against Ajax last season; His team later won the Eredivisie.

  • The average distance (metres) from your own goal when winning possession in open play: Feyenoord 45.2m, Liverpool 44.6m.
  • High rotations: Liverpool 353, Feyenoord 344.
  • Average possession in the league: Feyenoord 62 percent, Liverpool 61 percent.
