A full bench of the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria ordered the police minister to pay almost R200,000 in damages to two women after officers illegally detained them and demanded a bribe from one of them.

Justices Anthony Millar and Luleka Flatela, as well as Deputy Chief Justice Aubrey Ledwaba, heard the appeal the two women, Helga Muller and Yolandi Bell, lodged after the Pretoria Magistrates Court dismissed their claim for damages.

In the ruling, handed down on Wednesday, the High Court upholds the appeal and orders the Minister to pay Muller R102,000 and Bell R70,000, as well as to cover the costs of their lawsuit.
