Governor Fubara storms Rivers Assembly headquarters, considers renovation

Barely 24 hours after the appearance of a factional speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Governor Siminalayi Fubara on Thursday stormed the House of Assembly headquarters located along Aba Road in Port Harcourt, the capital of the state.

The development also comes just 72 hours after the governor outlined the route. Honorable. The House led by Martins Amaewhule is considered non-existent.

The Amaewhule-led House has been using the wards multi-purpose hall as its temporary meeting place following the demolition of a section of the House of Assembly complex, located along Moscow Road in Port Harcourt late from last year.

Speaking to journalists after the visit, Governor Fubara explained that his visit to the residential areas of the State House of Assembly was aimed at conducting an on-the-spot assessment of the condition of the structures for possible rehabilitation works to restore their state and make them habitable. .

The governor said, “Isn’t the Assembly building my property? Is there anything wrong with going to check how things are going there?

“You are aware of the events. We have a new speaker and I went there to see for myself how things are. “There may be some things I want to do there for the sake of our people.”

Fubara, who took a tour of the facility, said he decided to visit the site to better appreciate what needed to be done to make the facility conducive to lawmakers.

Earlier, the governor had paid an inspection visit to the ongoing Emohua-Kalabari road project, which is one of the projects scheduled to be commissioned to mark the first anniversary of his administration.

Commenting on the road project, he said he was assessing the scope of work that had been carried out to find out what else was needed to prepare the road for commissioning during its first anniversary.

Fubara said: “In fact, we added this section of the road as one of the projects we will commission. So I needed to see it myself and what’s left is just the lighting. By the grace of God, we will take care of it.”

The governor stated that he inherited the road project from the previous administration but that a greater part of the cost was borne by his administration.

He said: “We feel justified in adding it as our project and commissioning it for the sake of our people here. Governance is about people. When the people are left out of the center of governance, it is no longer governance.

“So this road, as we all know now, was in very bad condition. A lot of criminal activities took place here: kidnappings and all kinds of things. Therefore, it is appropriate to put this path in order.

“You can see the small hour of work we put into coming here. Before, it takes you 30 to 45 minutes to drive from Emohua to this place. But look, in less than 15 minutes we are here.

“So, it’s about the people, the good of the people, making their lives easier. This is how I see governance. Anything outside that has nothing to do with me.

“It is not about me. For me it is not about glory as a person. I am just a vessel that God is using to provide succor to the good people of Rivers State and more especially to our dear people of Kalabari origin.”
