The flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has promised to establish common user processing facilities and equipment in the various mining districts of Ghana if elected President, to promote responsible and sustainable mining practices.

Dr Bawumia made the pledge during the Third Annual Transformation Dialogue on Small Scale Mining in Sunyani on Wednesday, organized by the University of Energy and Natural Resources.

The PNP presidential candidate emphasized the importance of ensuring that mining activities benefit the country as a whole.

“I will establish common-use processing facilities to facilitate mining in various districts of the country,” he said.

“In addition, we will establish community environmental protection assistants who will work under the Minerals Commission/Environmental Protection Agency with river rangers and local authorities to increase the protection of our environment/water bodies.”

Common user processing facilities would help achieve the goal of environmental sustainability by providing efficient and environmentally friendly processing options for miners.

Such facilities would contribute to the fight against illegal mining activities, commonly known as “galamsey”, Dr Bawumia explained.

Dr Bawumia said mining must serve the collective good of the country and not just a select few and therefore emphasized the adoption of mining practices that prioritize environmental conservation and community well-being.

The PNP standard bearer is on a campaign tour throughout the country, which will last until the first week of June.

“Bold Solutions for Our Future” is the theme of their campaign, which focuses on three key pillars: the battle of ideas and character, the battle of records and the battle of an effective campaign.

His campaign team focuses on issue-based election campaigns, addressing compelling, practical and tailored ideas to address issues that are very important to the Ghanaian people.

Dr Bawumia will meet with a wide range of stakeholders including traditional rulers, clergy, youth groups, traders, drivers, farmers and students, and will interact with businesses and associations.

He has been visiting market centers and other public places to listen to the concerns of both traders and consumers.

Dr. Bawumia also contacted the media, held public meetings and continues his regular contacts with Ghanaians.

Since his election as the NPP flag bearer on November 4, 2023 for the December 7, 2024 elections, he has actively participated in extensive consultations and interactions with various groups across the country.
