Addis Ababa, May 9, 2024 (Addis Walta) Ethiopia and Germany have recently reaffirmed their commitment to working together to prevent climate change.

During a meeting between Seyoum Mekonnen, Minister of State of the Ministry of Planning and Development of Ethiopia, and Jennifer Lee Morgan, Secretary of State and Special Envoy of Germany for International Climate Action, both sides reiterated their dedication to the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC). Key areas of intervention included the development of renewable energy and improving energy accessibility.

Ethiopia’s investments in hydropower projects, such as the GERD and Koisha hydropower projects, were praised for their potential to boost energy access for Ethiopians. The Green Legacy Initiative was also praised for its significant contribution to the sustainability and effectiveness of its projects.

Germany expressed strong interest in supporting Ethiopia’s ambitious renewable energy initiatives. The two sides discussed collaboration on NDC and climate finance, as well as the upcoming update of Ethiopia’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0), scheduled for 2025.

Plans were outlined to review the achievements and shortcomings of the existing NDC, emphasizing the need for accessibility to climate finance and the ability to mobilize resources from available sources. Innovative financing mechanisms were also considered, including encouraging private sector participation in solutions to climate change and green growth.

Germany committed to providing continued support to strengthen stakeholder engagement and capacity development in Ethiopia, particularly in establishing a robust climate information and knowledge system. This was considered essential for informed decision-making and effective policy implementation.

The meeting concluded with a strong commitment from Germany and Ethiopia to intensify collaboration and work closely to accelerate climate action and achieve their mutual goals in national and regional initiatives.
