Bawumia accuses some ECG staff of using ransomware to sabotage paperless system

Vice President and flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has revealed how some employees of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) sabotaged efforts to digitize revenue mobilization.

According to him, the government was working hard on the paperless system, some employees of the IT unit also responded with ransomware.

Dr. Bawumia, who has been at the forefront of the digitalization drive, revealed this at the 2024 edition of the AGM of Anti-Corruption Agencies in Africa.

The ransomware, according to him, affected the performance of the system and eventually crashed it.

He stated that the intervention of National Security allowed the discovery and arrest of the saboteurs who demanded payment to restore the system.

“They just kept it at GH450 million every month, so I said we have to send a team to digitize the new collection of the Ghana Electricity Company, so we sent a team and started the digitization process.

“Can you believe the workers within the system sabotaged it? They introduced ransomware into the entire system and the system basically crashed. We had to send in Homeland Security and eventually found out that some staff in the IT department were to blame,” he stated.
