Rodent droppings and dirt found in kitchens at Fitzpatrick’s Castle Hotel, Killiney – The Irish Times

A closure order was issued to three kitchens at Fitzpatrick’s Castle Hotel in Killiney, Co Dublin, after food safety inspectors spotted rodent droppings, dirt and stagnant water.

The closure order was one of 21 imposed on food businesses by HSE environmental health officials in April, according to a report published on Thursday by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI). FSAI chief executive Dr Pamela Byrne said the number of closure orders issued last month was “alarming”.

The closure order given to Killiney Hotels Limited, which operates Fitzpatrick’s Castle Hotel, was specific to Albert & Behan Kitchen, PJ’s Kitchen and Mapas Kitchen on the premises.

HSE inspectors said debris was found on Albert and Behan’s kitchen floor, including an old sprouting potato and rodent droppings. An inspector’s report said that “the floor and pipes under and behind the kitchen equipment were encrusted with grease, dirt, grime and old food.”

In relation to PJ’s Kitchen, the HSE said the floor was “encrusted with grease, dirt, grime and food debris, particularly under the dishwasher, fryers and service fridges”. The inspector also noted that a shelf that stored clean dishes was in a “dirty condition” and contained broken pieces of dishes.

The Mapas Kitchen report found that “the floor beneath the kitchen equipment was encrusted with grease, grime, dirt and old food debris. “A puddle of stagnant water was also observed under this equipment.”

Additionally, the inspector’s report said that “old French fries from the previous day were found in the frying baskets and broken utensils and dishes were found on the floor under the dishwasher in this kitchen.” The inspector also noticed old food remains inside and on top of an outdated chest freezer. An old chicken bone and rodent droppings were found on the ground in this area.

The HSE said “the food business operator failed to establish, maintain or provide evidence of a food safety culture”. The Killiney Castle closure order was imposed on April 15 and records show it was lifted two days later on April 17.

Among the other venues ordered to close in April was Musashi Noodles and Sushi at 15 Capel Street, Dublin 1.

The inspector’s report notes: “The dirty basement kitchen drain is not working properly and is leaking. This has resulted in dirty water spraying onto food (including shrimp), food preparation surfaces, food preparation workers handling the food, and the ceiling, where it dripped into the food preparation area, where high-risk ready-to-eat foods, including salads. , He’s prepared.”

The inspector said staff had confirmed the pipeline had been malfunctioning in this way for “more than three months.” The closure order was issued on April 15 and was lifted on April 18.

At Georgian Delight, Kitchen 3 in Moore Street Mall, Dublin 1, an inspector noticed evidence of mouse and cockroach infestation, including a live mouse in a trap and cockroach activity on a shelf above a food preparation area, above a refrigerator and below. an oven. The FSAI did not release any date for the lifting of the order.

Sabor Nordestino, also in Moore Street Mall, was issued a closure order related to an “ongoing cockroach infestation.” No date was released for the lifting of the order.

Other outlets in Moore Street Mall and along the street itself were also ordered to close.

Separately, Ballsy Baker, of St Mochtas Lawn, Clonsilla, Dublin 15, was issued with a closure order in relation to its preparation, production and sale of food products marked “Nut Free” and “Gluten Free”.

Food product ingredients used to prepare and produce foods labeled ‘nut-free’ and ‘gluten-free’ were noted to be “stored in facilities, with limited space, that also contain nuts, peanuts and gluten.” The lockdown was imposed on April 11 and was lifted on April 23.
