In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Angira Dasgupta, HOD Chest Department, BR Singh Hospital, Kolkata, emphasized that despite the increasing prevalence of asthma in India, there is still a lack of awareness about asthma and its symptoms. . Not many are aware that asthma is not a disease that can be permanently cured, but can only be better controlled with proper intervention and medication.

She shared: “Surprisingly, in my daily practice, I have observed that only 20% of diagnosed patients are aware of asthma and its symptoms, while a large portion (80%) of diagnosed patients are unaware of the disease at the time.” . all. Among the 20% of conscious patients, the majority are young people between 20 and 40 years old. Likewise, those who are unaware of the disease are usually between 35 and 55 years old. Stating that the need to raise awareness about asthma is crucial for better management of the disease, Dr. Angira Dasgupta advised: “By understanding the symptoms and causes of asthma, people can take steps to avoid triggers, control their symptoms and reduce the risk of asthma attacks. For example, avoiding exposure to allergens such as dust mites, pet dander, and pollen can help reduce inflammation and narrowing of the airways.”
