WINDHOEK, May 8 (Xinhua) — The Confucius Institute of the University of Namibia (UNAM) organized the “Chinese Bridge” Chinese proficiency competition for foreign students from universities and secondary schools in Windhoek, the capital of Namibia, on Tuesday.

Kenneth Matengu, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Namibia, said the level and quality displayed in the 23rd “Chinese Bridge” competition for university students and the 17th “Chinese Bridge” competition for secondary school students in Namibia are constantly improving.

“It is a wonderful opportunity that we can provide our students and students,” he said, adding that the enthusiasm and participation of secondary schools was particularly notable, with the university sector also actively participating.

The competitions included various activities including speeches, song performances, contests and demonstrations of various Chinese cultural talents including calligraphy, with Sedney Teko winning the university competition and Angela Shoombe the high school category.

The two winners received tokens of appreciation in the form of mobile phones and smart watches and the opportunity to travel to China for the 2024 Chinese Bridge Competition.

Chinese ambassador to Namibia Zhao Weiping praised the students for their efforts and promised continued support.

“We need to add more teaching sites to catch up with reality. As Chinese ambassador, I would like to get more resources for that purpose,” he said. “I hope that with our joint efforts, Chinese language teaching will benefit more Namibian people.”
