Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive Officer Yohane Amarh Ashitey has rejected calls for the government to launch a swift operation for the immediate arrest and detention of former President John Mahama following the 2024 elections.

In a statement shared on social media, the MCE expressed confidence that concerns that Mr John Mahama may cause chaos by falsely claiming victory in the elections are unnecessary. He believes the people of Ghana will not take such claims seriously.

“The Ghanaian people are perspicacious and will not be fooled by Mr. John Mahama,” the MCE said, stressing that the former president would be ignored if he attempts to repeat such actions.

This assurance from the MCE comes after a suggestion by a former NDC executive in the Tema East constituency, Stephen Ashitey Adjei, also known as Moshake, that the government be prepared to arrest and detain John Mahama if he challenges the results of the elections in 2024.

Moshake emphasized the importance of maintaining peace after the elections to avoid violence like what occurred in 2020.

Moshake recalled how tensions rose after the 2020 elections due to NDC claims of victory, despite clear results showing otherwise.

“In 2020, no one arrested John Mahama after he claimed he had won 10 of the 16 regions. Ghanaians simply ignored his claims and life moved on. It is the same thing that will happen in 2024 too,” wrote Yohane Amarh Ashitey.

He further noted that Ghanaians will not accept any baseless claims by Mahama in 2024. He expressed confidence that Dr. Bawumia will emerge victorious from the elections, citing the support shown by the youths for the current government.

While the youth actively participate in the limited registration process and show their appreciation for the government’s policies, Ashitey believes that any attempt by Mahama to dispute the election result will be ignored.

“We will go to the 2024 elections, Dr. Bawumia will win and Ghanaians will be so busy retiring that no one will have time to listen to Mr. John Mahama’s spurious claims. Look at the way young people are participating in the limited elections. registration exercise to retain the NPP government through free education, go and watch the youths openly praise the Akufo Addo-Bawumia government at the EC registration centres!” Yohane Amarh Ashitey wrote.
