Hango returns as president of Tucna – The truth, by itself.

Paulus Hango was re-elected president of the Namibia Trade Union Congress during the union’s fifth congress, held recently in Walvis Bay.

Toini Nauyoma and Mahongora Kavihuha were also re-elected as first vice president and general secretary respectively.

The newly elected members were Junias Shilunga as second vice president, Fiina Petrus as treasurer and McCarious Somaeb as deputy treasurer.

Each affiliated union under the Tucna union also elected two representatives to the national executive council, who will ensure efficiency, effectiveness and accountability.

Meanwhile, Congress addressed critical national issues, including the establishment of a sovereign wealth fund.

Hango, during a press conference on Wednesday, highlighted the importance of Namibia having established a sovereign wealth fund and said there should be a proper policy on how these funds will be distributed to Namibians.

“Especially considering we have a small population, this fund was overdue because, with several oil and gas discoveries, we would like this money to directly benefit citizens. “Many Namibians are suffering and investors who invest in the country are keeping almost everything, something we do not want to see continue,” he stated.

The Welwitschia Sovereign Wealth Fund was created in 2022 to enhance national resilience and promote intergenerational prosperity by redistributing the benefits of Namibia’s natural resources.

Hango also emphasized the issue of added value, noting that Namibia currently exports a large amount of raw materials, which must change.

“This prevents the country from developing and solving the problems of unemployment. For example, we have a lot of marble and hundreds of trucks are constantly loading and transporting it out of the country raw. This is disappointing because it was supposed to create jobs here in Namibia and therefore should be addressed,” he stated.

The union’s SG highlighted that the congress was an opportunity for the union to take stock of its progress so far.

“Congresses are one of the most important internal democratic processes that every union must carry out,” he stated.

The congress took place from April 27 to 30.
