Kylian Mbappé fails to end his PSG career with the Champions League trophy as brilliant Borussia Dortmund reach the final

Borussia Dortmund brought down the curtain on Kylian Mbappé’s European career with Paris Saint-Germain to reach the Champions League final for the first time since 2013.

The German team, fifth in the Bundesliga, stunned the French champions 1-0 in Paris to secure their place in the final, completing a 2-0 aggregate victory.

Mats Hummels scored the decisive goal to send Dortmund to the quarterfinals

Mbappé, who will leave PSG in the summer and is expected to join Real Madrid, had hoped to retire by leading the club to Champions League glory for the first time in its history.

But the French superstar was eliminated by a brilliantly organized Dortmund, who fully deserved their two-legged victory.

Mats Hummels scored the winning goal on Tuesday night for Edin Terzic’s side, heading home in the second half to put Dortmund out of sight.

Paris Saint-Germain advanced late in the match and hit the woodwork twice in the final minutes, bringing their tally to six times they hit the goal on both legs, a hugely frustrating end to the game.

Not only that, but PSG took 44 shots on goal in the two games, only eight of which were on goal.

Mbappé was largely ineffective as he failed to add to his 48 goals in the Champions League, and L’Equipe gave him a rating of 3/10 for his performance in the second leg.

The 25-year-old will leave Paris having lifted six league titles, but will be disappointed not to have been the man who brought them Euro glory.

Despite their huge expenses under Qatari ownership, PSG’s wait for Champions League glory extends to another year.

It’s a delight for Manchester United’s on-loan player Jadon Sancho, although he failed to impress as he did in the first leg.

Danny Mills told talkSPORT: “Jadon Sancho, despite all the fuss in the first leg, I think he was very normal in the second.”

But that will matter little to him, having more than fulfilled his role in reaching a European final after being ostracized by Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.

Dortmund will face Real Madrid or Bayern Munich, who will meet on Wednesday at the Bernabue with a 2-2 draw, for the chance to become the best club in Europe.

With Wembley Stadium as the venue, it will be spectacular to see the yellow wall on display in London.
