Borussia Dortmund eliminates Kylian Mbappé’s PSG and reaches the Champions League final

Kylian Mbappé saw his PSG Champions League dream crushed by veteran defender Mats Hummels.

Dortmund advanced to the Wembley final after a brilliant away performance and a resilient defence, in which PSG also hit the woodwork SIX times in two games. The French superstar will join Real Madrid this summer after failing to bring the holy grail to Qatari ownership of PSG by becoming European champions.

Hummels was the sole survivor of Dortmund’s losing finalist team in 2013 and has another shot at glory. PSG will have to rebuild, without Mbappé, and perhaps with fewer stars and more equipment in the future.

The Germans took the lead in the Parc des Princes after Niclas Fullkrug’s goal. And they defended their lead expertly, despite the fact that PSG had 29 attempts on goal, but only five. Edin Terzic’s men nullified PSG’s wing play with their midfielders and back four remaining compact.

They then hit PSG early in the second half when Hummels doubled their lead. Mbappé did not set the game on fire. He caused the first real concern in the German ranks with a dribble that eliminated four defenders before passing the ball to the right of the goal, where Ouseman Dembélé fired.

Mbappé then missed a shot from eight yards and, from the breakaway attack, Gianluigi Donnarumma needed to make a strong save to deny Karim Adeyemi, who ran 60 yards with the ball to fire. It was a rowdy night even before kick-off and the home fans managed to set a Dortmund banner on fire with a flare to warm up the atmosphere and a red wall of flares after the break.

After the break, PSG missed an open goal, when a touch from Gonçalo Ramos deflected towards the far post and Warren Zaire Emery was on hand to hit the post. Dortmund’s response was positive, a three-pass play freed up Adeyemi to earn Marquinhos a corner and the goal that doubled their lead.

Hummels, 35, rose at the far post to head a close-range header past Luca Beraldo. He has played more than 500 games for the club and made four this season, but few have been more important.
