Corky teen Meg Haugh remembered as ‘beacon of light’ as friends pay tribute

Meg Haugh has been remembered as a “beautiful” person and a “beacon of light” by friends and family paying tribute to the young Cork girl following her death.

Blackrock native Meg, who was just 26, sadly died in the Philippines on Thursday after falling ill while canyoneering on the tropical island of Badian. She had been with a group jumping and swimming through canyons and waterfalls when she suddenly became ill over the weekend.




Her death notice, released today, announces that Meg died “suddenly, in the company of her good friend Tessa, while exploring the beautiful Philippines.

“Meg, beloved daughter of Richard and Kathryn, adored sister of Sally, Marty and William, beloved granddaughter of Willie and the late Peggy, Sally and Martin. Meg will always be remembered by her loving parents, siblings, grandfather, aunts, uncles, cousins, great friends and wonderful neighbors.

Tributes continue to pour in from around the world as friends and family remember the young adventurer and express their condolences to her family here in Cork.

A friend wrote online: “Meg was truly a lovely, kind and positive person. It was a pleasure to call Meg a friend and she will always be remembered. My deepest condolences to her family during this very difficult time.”

Another added: “Meg was living her dream, traveling, exploring new places. You are all in our thoughts at this sad and difficult time.”

Another friend said: “I met Meg while living in Australia, she was a beacon of light, always up for a chat and will be deeply missed. Sending you prayers at this difficult time.”

Ballintemple-based football club Avondale United paid tribute to the youngster in a statement on Friday. A spokesperson wrote: “It is with great sadness that we learn of the untimely passing of young Meg Haugh, daughter of Richard Haugh.

“As a mark of respect to Richard, our friend, Child Safety Officer and Committee member, with long service to the club. The Club Academies will not take place today Friday 3rd May and our weekend home games are cancelled. Our thoughts are with Richard and his family, including uncle John Haugh, an underage coach, family and friends may he rest in peace.”
