Borussia Dortmund became the first team to reach the Champions League final at Wembley when a second-half header from Mats Hummels earned them a 1-0 win at Paris Saint-Germain, to complete a victory overall 2-0.

Leading by a goal from the first leg in Germany, Dortmund put on a brilliant defensive display to stifle Kylian Mbappé and company, then Hummels rose highest to head home Julian Brandt’s corner five minutes into the second half.

That goal was crucial as PSG hit the post four times in the second half through Warren Zaire-Emery, Nuno Mendes, Mbappé and Vitinha, meaning the French side were denied by the post six times in the two games. .

PSG also wasted the ball and failed to score on 30 shots. Gonçalo Ramos squandered the best of chances, while a penalty was denied to the hosts by referee Daniele Orsato, who changed his mind and awarded a free kick on the edge of the area instead of a penalty.

So Dortmund’s excellent efficiency – not Mbappé’s magic – will grace the Champions League final in London on June 1 against Real Madrid or Bayern Munich.

How Dortmund -and the email- denied PSG

A raucous atmosphere greeted both players, with numerous PSG banners, including a Dortmund shield torn in front of their players’ eyes. Mbappé had the first chance of the night, seeing a volley inside the area but finding Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel Ramos fired wide from the edge of the area in the first of his many missed opportunities.

team news

  • PSG made two changes from the first-leg defeat in Germany, with Lucas Beraldo and Gonçalo Ramos replacing the injured Lucas Hernández and Bradley Barcola.
  • Borussia Dortmund named the same team that won the first leg, having rested all ten of their outfield players for the 5-1 Bundesliga victory over Augsburg at the weekend.

But Dortmund’s confidence grew when Karim Adeyemi saw a shot deflected wide, before Julian Ryerson crashed a shot into the side netting after some good play in the box by Niclas Fullkrug following a long throw.

Two quick chances on both sides came in the space of a few seconds as Hummels denied Mbappé a touch with a superb late challenge, before Adeyemi showed his pace on the counter-attack, forcing Gianluigi Donnarumma into a smart save.

PSG failed to score with 30 shots in the second leg, so they were goalless with 44 shots in the two games.

PSG’s final chances in the first half saw long-range attacks from Vitinha and Fabián Ruiz easily neutralized, underlining how well Dortmund defended in the first half.

The German team took advantage minutes into the second half when Zaire-Emery hit the post from just a few yards out, and moments later Dortmund’s lead was doubled.

It was a simple but significant goal as Hummels rose highest, albeit unmarked, to meet Brandt’s corner and PSG had a mountain to climb.

The hosts’ response was emphatic but unhelpful. Ramos fired in a shot from close range before Nuno Mendes hit the post with a rasping shot from the edge of the area.

PSG thought they had a way back when referee Daniele Orsato pointed to the penalty spot after Hummels brought down Ousmane Dembélé, but the Italian referee immediately changed his mind and took a free kick on the edge of the area, and the VAR was according to the modified decision. .

Mbappe then had just his second shot of the game as it crashed into the side netting, before the Frenchman saw a close-range shot hit the crossbar by Kobel.

Vitinha scored another shot that hit the woodwork when his long-range shot bounced off the frame of the goal. It just wasn’t PSG’s night, while it remains on track to be Dortmund’s Champions League season.

Terzic: The dream is not over yet

The Athletic’s David Ornstein and the Mirror’s John Cross talk about Borussia Dortmund’s 2-0 aggregate victory over PSG, which saw them reach the Champions League final.

Borussia Dortmund coach Edin Terzic to TNT Sports:

“Proud. If I have to find a word, it is pride for us. I am very proud of my staff and my team, of the club. The dream is not over yet!

“We suffered a lot, but we showed a very good game away from home against a team that is so powerful in attack, so fast, so mobile, and we kept two clean sheets. We won both games in the semifinals, this is incredible and pending.

“(The defense was) led by Gregor Kobel, then Hummels, then Nico Schlotterbeck, then Julian Ryerson, then Ian Maatsen. The guys in front of them, it was an outstanding team performance. Other than that, you have no chance of maintaining a clean sheet. It’s impossible.

“The second half was exciting and I kept a clean sheet, doing everything I could to block crosses and shots.”

Enrique: Football is sometimes so unfair

PSG coach, Luis Enrique, to TNT Sports:

“When the result is that, it’s a difficult night. A close game but, to be honest, we deserved to win the game.

“We created 30 shots, four on the post and in both games we hit the post six times and did not score a goal. Football is sometimes very unfair.

“Congratulations to them, they are a great team. They did very well and I hope they can reach the final and win it.

“Our job is to try to create something positive. Now is a sad time, but at the same time we have to accept that the game develops that way. We have to create something special next year and try to win that competition.”

Analysis: Dortmund’s dream streak continues

Mats Hummels and Jadon Sancho celebrate reaching the Champions League final

Borussia Dortmund didn’t even want to get out of the group stage, much less reach the final.

Edin Terzic’s side faced PSG, AC Milan and Newcastle in the opening games of this season’s competitions, with the Bundesliga side deemed the least likely to go a step further.

Yet here they are again. That’s two Champions League finals at Wembley in the space of 11 years and this is the sweetest one yet. In 2013, Jurgen Klopp was the coach of Dortmund, with Robert Lewandowski at the helm.

This Dortmund team, on the other hand, lost Jude Bellingham to Real Madrid this summer. It’s an unlikely group of players.

Earlier this season, Jadon Sancho was excluded from Manchester United. Ian Maatsen had just left on loan at Burnley and Coventry.

Just four years ago, Karim Adeyemi was playing for Liefering in the Austrian second division, while 20-year-old Nico Schlotterbeck was playing in the fourth division for Freiburg’s second team.

The next step for these misfits is Wembley, and it cannot even be ruled out that they go all the way.
