The motive for the attack, which took place shortly after 11:30 a.m. local time, has not yet been provided.

The suspect was detained later that day by a uniformed police officer and four undercover officers, according to the official Weibo account of the Guizhou radio and television station.

The report said the man was carrying a bottle of water and some bread when officers tackled him to the ground.

Local police later said the man they detained was a 40-year-old man identified only by the surname Li.

Little is known about the victims so far, but police said they were being treated in hospital. State news agency Xinhua said “relevant information is being verified.”

Zhenxiong, located in northeastern Yunnan, borders Guizhou and Sichuan provinces and until 2020 was classified as “poverty-stricken.”

In January, the county was hit by an avalanche that killed 44 people.
