West Ham feel a change was needed and now is the right time for a new head coach after the club confirmed the departure of manager David Moyes at the end of the season.

The Scot will leave the London Stadium after four and a half years in which he guided the Hammers to Europa Conference League success last season, their first major trophy in 43 years.

But the decision to leave the 61-year-old coach was made reluctantly, but with the best interests of the club in mind.

Moyes was offered a new contract at the end of December but did not sign it for five weeks, and since the turn of the year West Ham have won just four of 23 games.

Their poor form in 2024 has left them ninth in the Premier League with their hopes of a fourth consecutive season in Europe hanging by a thread.

Stephen Warnock says West Ham need to show some class, after announcing that Julen Lopetegui has agreed an agreement in principle if David Moyes decides to leave.

In the standings since Christmas, West Ham would be 17th and the decision to replace Moyes was made after an in-depth analysis of results and performances.

The expulsion of manager Tim Steidten from the dressing room and the training ground did not help Moyes either.

There was also a feeling that the January transfer window was a missed opportunity with deals to be done, but the only deal Moyes wanted to proceed with was the loan of Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City.

After the hundreds of millions spent on players during Moyes’ second spell in charge, West Ham felt no manager could have survived the results of the last five months unless they accept they are in the bottom three.

West Ham feel they gave Moyes all the time they could in the hope he would turn things around, but things got worse, not better.

West Ham have won just one of their last 10 games in all competitions and lost five.

They have also conceded 70 goals in the league this season and although they won silver last season, they finished 14th in the league.

Moyes will be replaced by former Wolves boss Julen Lopetegui and West Ham want the decision to replace Moyes to be judged within 12 months.

Why Lopetegui is suitable for West Ham

Julen Lopetegui will replace David Moyes as West Ham manager in the summer

West Ham’s appointment of Julen Lopetegui seems like a smart decision. He is a coach with experience in the Premier League but someone who wants to show what he can do with greater resources. At West Ham, he finds a club eager to embrace a new form.

David Moyes has done well in his second spell, most memorably leading them to a European trophy. But there is an appetite for a more progressive style of play and Lopetegui’s record, particularly in Spain, suggests he can achieve it.

His brief spell at Wolves means he is a well-known figure and while that seems to have worked against him in the eyes of some fans, it shouldn’t be that way. His achievement in changing things there demonstrated his motivational skills and his adaptability.

Merson says: West Ham should be careful what they wish for

Sky Sports’ Paul Merson:

West Ham must be careful what they wish for. Moyes uprooted trees there and won a European trophy. Solid seventh, eighth, ninth, top half of the table again.

I’m not saying it will happen overnight, what happened to Charlton, but I remember many years ago when I played, their fans were asking to get rid of Alan Curbishley, saying he was boring, in the middle of the table, they wanted kick. in.

They have never been seen since. This manager is top notch. They won a European trophy! He’s just crazy.

I wouldn’t have gotten rid of it in a month of Sundays. You’ll have West Ham fans coming back, saying this and that, throwing out all the statistics in the world. But I’ll just show you the most important statistic of all. He. Cattle. You. A. Trophy.

I don’t care at all about this entertaining football, we don’t play that well, we should do better with these players. They won a trophy! If you look at Arsenal, they are unbelievable and could be left with nothing.
