Giovanni Guidi Jazz Festival Today

The Italian Cultural Institute in Pretoria, in collaboration with International Jazz Day, hosts a Giovanni Guidi Jazz Trio in Namibia today at the National Theater of Namibia.

The concert will be opened by national vocal artist Erna Chimu and her band for a night of magical rhythms.

Namibian jazz singer and songwriter Chimu rose to fame when she won several music awards in 2014, including best jazz instrumental, best traditional song and female artist of the year at the Namibia Annual Music Awards.

Chimú told him VIBEZ who is thrilled because she was chosen for this specific show. She can’t wait to share her music and, at the same time, learn from the best.

“I will perform as an acoustic piece. It’s disconnected and more intimate. I have a 30 minute schedule. I have some projects in the pipeline, but it is too early to release that information,” he said.

She added that she is grateful to the people of Namibia for the support and to all the parastatals, stakeholders who are getting involved to revive live music because this scene has been struggling, especially the Jazz audience, as we all know, jazz should be played with a band. and catering to a band is usually expensive.

Brenda Sisane, spokesperson for Giovanni Guidi, explained that Giovanni Guidi is an Italian jazz pianist well known on the European scene as a bandleader and frequent accompanist for trumpeter Enrico Rava. His playing is said to be subtle but technically skillful in both his solo and accompanist performances. Following his debut album as a leader at the young age of 21, Guidi has always demonstrated resourcefulness and adaptability. “In 2013, he signed with the famous record label ECM and soon after began his collaboration with the American bassist Joe Rehmer and the Italian drummer Enrico Morello,” said Sisane.

He added that it is now a well-established trio recognized for its unique sound and style, combining elements of jazz, classical music and improvisation. They have released several albums and collaborations, and performed at various venues and festivals around the world, receiving critical acclaim for their live performances.
