Hughes is the captain of the World Athletics Relays team GB and NI

UK Athletics (UKA) has announced Zharnel Hughes as captain of the Great Britain and Northern Ireland team taking part in the World Athletics Relays. The meeting will take place in Nassau, Bahamas, this weekend.

UKA’s goal for the World Athletics Relays Bahamas 24 is to qualify all relay teams for the Paris Olympic Games. The championships are the culmination of a two-week relay training camp in Florida and the teams selected for each race will be announced Saturday.

Head of Sprints, Hurdles and Relays, Darren Campbell, commented: β€œI am very pleased to see Zharnel progress over the last year to become an overall individual medallist. His conduct as an individual and team athlete is so focused that it makes him the ideal team captain that he leads by example.”

Hughes, the British 100m and 200m record holder, said: β€œWhen Darren spoke to me in camp and asked me, I was a little hesitant at first, but then I said, ‘I’ve got it!’ We’re here to qualify for Paris and I know we’re going to go out and crush it. I know that if we play our best game, are consistent with our check marks and do it every day, we will be able to get the job done this weekend.”

The teams will qualify for Paris by qualifying for their respective finals. Qualifiers for all events will take place on Saturday and the finals are scheduled for Sunday night at Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium in Nassau.
