2 men arrested after ‘concerning’ amount of explosives found: Winnipeg police – Winnipeg

Two men were arrested after a “diverse and concerning amount of explosive substances” were found during raids in Headingley, Man., and two other locations in West Winnipeg, police said.

Evan Reimer, 24, and a 23-year-old man were arrested Thursday, the officer said.

In sp. Elton Hall said Reimer was out on bail when he was handcuffed.

“Investigators believe this individual may have been planning to detonate an explosive device outside of Winnipeg over the May long weekend,” Hall said.

He said anyone who knows the suspect or anyone who may be related to him should inform police.

“There will be other people involved, so we are asking the public for help,” he said. “Any information you can provide us would help us investigate Mr. Reimer and his associations, or what he has been doing over the past few months.”

At this time, “there is no specific threat to the public,” he said.

“We don’t have a lot of information about it at this time,” Hall said, noting that the investigation is still in its early stages.

Police are also investigating an earlier explosion that occurred in Headingley, but did not say when it occurred.

“It was big enough that people in that area would call to complain about an explosion and they could feel it in their homes,” Hall said.

“I had never, in my time, come here and done anything like this. The devices and explosive material are important and we are concerned,” she said. “But I want to repeat that there is no threat to the public.”

Hall said the ages of the suspects are a concern for investigators.

“Society is changing, social media influences people’s opinions and points of view,” he said.

Reimer remains behind bars and the 23-year-old was released on bail.

There will be more information in the future, Hall said.
