Grandparents murdered in the wrong direction on the highway. They identify accident 401 that also claimed the life of a baby

The Consulate General of India in Toronto has identified the grandparents murdered in a Wrong-way accident on Highway 401.

A three-month-old baby, her grandson, also died in the car accident Monday night.

In a social media post on Friday evening, the Consulate General identified the deceased grandparents as Mr. Manivannan and Ms. Mahalakshmi.

“My deepest condolences on the tragic loss of Indian citizens Mr. Manivannan, Ms. Mahalakshmi and their grandson in the Highway 401 collision,” he posted, adding that he met the “grieving family at the hospital ” and offered them help.

Before the deadly crash on Highway 401 in Whitby, police were pursuing at least one suspect who robbed an LCBO, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said.

The SIU confirmed that the Durham Region Police Service (DRPS) was called to a robbery at an LCBO in Clarington shortly after 8pm on Monday. When police arrived, the suspect fled in a pickup truck and a chase began.

They say the driver then headed onto Highway 401, driving in the wrong direction, resulting in a multi-vehicle crash that ultimately claimed four lives.

The grandparents, the baby and the driver of the cargo van died.

The baby’s parents survived the accident.

Chase audio reveals at least one Ontario Provincial Police officer expressing concern that “someone is going to get hurt” after seeing the high speed chase going the wrong direction on the highway.

Questions have now been raised about the police chase and whether it contravened the province’s Community Safety and Policing Act.
