Local elections and London mayoral results 2024: Conservatives suffer big losses as focus turns to London and West Midlands

Sadiq Khan casts his vote in the London mayoral election

Rishi Sunak suffered a terrible first day of council election results and the Prime Minister is now nervously awaiting the outcome of the West Midlands mayoral race on Saturday.

Of the 107 councils that held elections on Thursday, 102 declared their full results on Friday night and the Conservatives lost more than 400 councilors as the party lost control of 10 councils.

Election expert Sir John Curtice suggested the final result could be the party’s worst performance in 40 years.

Sunak also suffered a loss in his “backyard” of Yorkshire and North Yorkshire, where Labor mayor David Skaith was elected mayor of the region.

Lord Ben Houchen’s re-election on Teesside was a crumb of comfort for the Conservatives on a terrible night, just months before a general election.

Attention now turns to the London and West Midlands mayoral elections, where a victory for Conservative Andy Street could help stop a leadership plot by rebel MPs.

ICYMI: Conservative mayor says he ‘forgot’ to wear blue rosette during local elections

Conservative mayor claims he “forgot” to wear blue rosette during local elections

The winning Conservative candidate in the Tees Valley mayoral election claimed he “forgot” his blue cockade while celebrating victory on Friday, May 3. Ben Houchen has denied “trying to pretend” he was not a Conservative during his mayoral election campaign, despite saying he “absolutely” could work with Sir Keir Starmer if the Labor leader becomes prime minister. “People here know I’m a Conservative,” he told Sky News when asked about apparent efforts to distance himself from the Conservative Party brand and instead run on a very personal platform. Lord Houchen was the only candidate on stage not to wear the party rosette at the Tees Valley count, saying he “forgot” it.

Will Tees Valley lifeboat save Rishi Sunak from sinking?

Ben Houchen’s victory in the Tees Valley mayoral election provides an almost solitary ray of Tory hope after the party’s “seismic” election defeats, writes David Maddox.

With hundreds of Conservative councilors losing their seats, failing to win the North Yorkshire mayoralty in Rishi Sunak’s own backyard and the biggest swing against him in a by-election in Blackpool South, things are looking pretty bleak for the Prime Minister.

The Labor candidate celebrates the electoral victory at the gates of Sunak: “The message is clear”

Labor’s David Skaith celebrated his victory in the York and North Yorkshire mayoral elections on Rishi Sunak’s doorstep. The area contains the Prime Minister’s own Richmond constituency and was previously considered a Conservative stronghold. It was another blow for Sunak as the Conservatives were set to suffer a humiliating defeat in this year’s local elections. Skaithe was elected the region’s first leader with 35.1 percent of the vote, compared to 27.3 percent for the Conservative candidate.

ICYMI: Reform’s Lee Anderson clashes with Nick Robinson in intense exchange over Nigel Farage

Reform’s Lee Anderson clashes with Nick Robinson in intense exchange over Nigel Farage

Lee Anderson clashed with BBC journalist Nick Robinson today as the Reform Party was accused of taking votes from the Conservatives in local elections. Rishi Sunak sacked Anderson from the Conservative party after he refused to apologize for comments he made about London mayor Sadiq Khan. After losing the whip, Anderson went independent before joining the Reform Party, set up by Nigel Farage. In a heated debate on BBC Radio 4’s Today program on Friday (May 3), Robinson asked Anderson about Farage’s candidacy for the next election.

Rishi Sunak remains optimistic despite ‘disappointing’ local elections for Tories

Rishi Sunak seemed optimistic even though the Conservatives suffered defeats across the country in Friday’s (May 3) local election results.

Experts have warned that the Conservatives could lose 500 seats in what could be their worst numbers in 40 years.

Sunak acknowledged the defeats, but wanted to highlight the fact that his party had clung to harlow – although there the party’s majority was reduced from nine to a single seat.

“(Mister) Keir Starmer held a rally Wednesday saying (Harlow) was a place he had to win to be on track to win the general election.

“That hasn’t happened.”

Impact of Gaza on the Labor vote

Labor MP Clive Betts said there was “no doubt” the party had lost votes as a result of its stance on Gaza.

The Sheffield South East MP added: “In my constituency people tell me very clearly, and in one of the constituencies that was one of our safest, an independent candidate was elected fighting solely on the Gaza issue, he did not fight on anything else, that’s what their brochures were about.

“So people voted on the basis that they were unhappy with Labor and our stance on Gaza.

“A lot of that was a mistake, because we believed that we had not changed our position on Gaza for a few months, but once people consider that we have been wrong, it is very difficult to change our mind.”

For conservatives recovering from local election disaster, denial is the first stage of grief

Veteran conservatives put their fingers in their ears and pretend the dire results simply don’t exist, writes Joe Murphy. But, unfortunately for them, they do, and it won’t be long before reality hits them.

What if Susan Hall really won? Conservative candidate for key London mayoral policies

Labour’s Sadiq Khan is facing his Conservative rival Susan Hall to win a third term as London mayor, with poll results ahead of the actual vote unanimously suggesting he would win comfortably.

However, as London waits for the count to begin on Saturday, several journalists from outlets such as GB News and the Signing times They have reported anxieties within the Labor camp and, incredibly unbelievably, confidence in the Tory camp headquarters that the result will be close enough for a historic upset.

Green Party Success

Big night for the Green Party in Bristol – the party won 10 seats and became the largest party on the city council.

The party now holds 34 of the 70 seats, gaining 10 more seats after Thursday night’s vote. The second largest party with 21 seats, Labor, lost three, while the Conservatives lost half and now have just seven.

The only downside for the Greens was that they didn’t actually take control.

However, party co-leader Carla Denyer, who will stand in a new Bristol constituency at the next general election, was pleased with the result.

“I am so grateful for all the support voters have given us in Bristol and across the country,” she said.
