Knife-wielding man charged after fight at Melbourne shopping center

A 30-year-old man has been charged with allegedly threatening two people with a knife at a shopping center in Melbourne west yesterday.

Detectives believe the man allegedly stole a knife from a grocery store before starting to wave it around inside the Watergardens shopping center in Taylors Lakes around 12:50 p.m.

Police allege the man used the knife to assault and threaten a 21-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman.

The Sunshine man has since been charged with two counts of unlawful assault, robbery, threats to kill and use of weapons with criminal intent.

A witness called Tony told Nine radio’s 3AW Afternoons program yesterday that a fight had developed between two men shortly before police arrived.

“There was a fight in the middle of the mall,” he said.

“Two people were fighting and it looked like one had pulled out a weapon, I’m not sure, it could be a knife.”

Tony said several people, including some people who worked at a nearby barbershop, intervened and knocked the men to the ground.

The 30-year-old man has been remanded in custody to appear in court at a later date.
