Kevin Walters press conference, Brisbane Broncos vs Sydney Roosters, Adam Reynolds injury, Round 9

Kevin Walters is hoping to have injured duo Adam Reynolds and Jesse Arthars back for the end of the season despite injury setbacks in the Broncos’ 40-18 loss to the Roosters.

Reynolds suffered a torn bicep, while Arthars went to hospital with a broken jaw on a miserable night for the title contenders.

“Yeah, it’s not looking very good for him,” Walters said.

“He has a biceps injury, a torn biceps, so I assume he will have to have surgery and will be out for a considerable period, as I would have thought.

“Potentially (the season finale), yes. Until they get there and operate on it, I guess they won’t know.

“I don’t know much about biceps, but I know he’ll be out for a long period of time, so that’s all I can say.”

However, Walters is confident the Broncos have the depth to fill the void for the rest of the season and continue challenging for the title.

“Yeah, certainly mate,” Walters said.

“We are very fortunate that our club has great depth in all positions.

“Jesse Arthars also broke his jaw, so those are two long-term injuries for us, but yeah, that’s how it goes sometimes.”

Walters was more concerned about the Broncos’ lackluster performances over the past month than injuries to key players.

“No, I’m not worried about that, we have good depth, I’m more worried about how we played tonight than anything else, so when we fix that, that’s what we have to do,” Walters said.

“And we’ll get Adam back, I’m pretty sure, before the year is out, and Jesse too.

“We just kicked the ball, silly little kicks, you can’t build pressure when you do that,” Walters said.

“And there are also other parts of our game that I haven’t been happy with in the last three or four weeks, which were exposed tonight, so we have a lot to work on, that’s for sure.

“But the good thing is, what are we in Round 9?”

Walters challenged the entire team and especially the veteran players to stand up in Reynolds’ absence.

“I think the ownership needs to be spread across the group, with Paddy there, with Reece there, with Ezra and with Billy and Tyson, everyone needs to step up in that space without Reynolds there,” Walters said.

“Moving Reece will not be an option for us. We will leave him as a winger.

“Tristan Sailor is definitely an option. He’s got a good football IQ and we’ve been defending him at the front line, he’s been doing that at Queensland Cup level, but we’ve got a few options there so we’ll wait and see, let the dust settle. weekend.”

New captain Patrick Carrigan was stoic despite a tough night for his team.

“We’ll find out what we’re made of, buddy,” Carrigan said.

“Tonight we fought to recover, we had a lot of things that didn’t go our way, but we had one chance where I think it was 18 in total and those little things that we haven’t been happy with, you know, it came back into our game , so it’s a life like that at 40, I think this happens to many teams.

“Just keep going. We have a lot of depth in our club and I am sure that whoever plays there will do a job for us. So here’s a football team, buddy. We just have to figure out a couple of things.”

Carrigan challenged his team to maintain higher standards after a frustrating performance against the Chooks.

“Just holding the football buddy,” Carrigan said.

“It’s pretty easy to just generate pressure. Roosters a high quality team. I should give them a lot of credit. There are a lot of really good players and very well coached by Teddy, so if you keep making mistakes, they will make you pay for them and they did tonight.

“That’s why I think now is a unique opportunity for us. We had Jordan Rikki playing in the centers tonight.

“We had a lot of experience in pressure situations where we hope to be at full strength by the end of the year and something chaotic happens and those guys have had some experience in those positions. So consider it positive and move on.”
