Community fearful after off-duty police officers shot dead in East Trasacco

Residents of Block Factory in East Trasacco in Accra say they are living in fear after two off-duty police officers were shot dead by unknown gunmen on Thursday night.

The sense of foreboding persists in the community, even 24 hours after the incident.

In an interview with joynewsOne resident expressed concern and stated that she had requested a refund from her landlord to vacate the premises due to the rampant shootings.

“I could have been a victim if I was also sitting outside, I don’t understand why they came to shoot the police,” he said.

She said the whole incident happened very quickly.

“I wasn’t outside, I was in my room when I heard multiple shots, then I ran out and saw two of my co-tenants lying lifeless, if I’m not exaggerating I heard more than 10 shots.”

After the shooting stopped, residents ran outside to see what was happening, he recalled.

However, upon reaching the spot, they found two off-duty police officers lying on the ground: one a CID officer and the other a regular police officer.

He noted that although both police officers initially appeared deceased, it was later found that the CID officer was still breathing. He was immediately taken to hospital, but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries before receiving medical attention, as confirmed upon his arrival at the hospital.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has stated that a search is underway to arrest the perpetrators who fled on a motorcycle.

Security analyst Dr. Adams Bonaa believes the assassination was targeted. He is optimistic that the police will soon arrest the perpetrators.

“What could be the cause? I’ll say it’s difficult right now. There are a lot of theories that can be put forward, but what I can say is that this looks like a targeted killing, or the guys are in the area or they were tipped off that the Police officers had returned home and were getting fresh air and for the murderers to come and finish them off, there are two things,” he added.

He stressed the importance of taking swift action to ensure that justice is served and to prevent such heinous crimes from being repeated.
