Protesters Picket Outside NYU, New School After Police Clear Camps

Protesters picked up outside New York University and The New School on Friday, May 3, hours after the New York Police Department arrested dozens of people and cleared out protest encampments at both campuses, local reports said.

In a post to X, NYPD Deputy Commissioner Kaz Daughtry said NYU and The New School both requested assistance in dispersing the “illegal encampments.” According to NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell56 people were arrested Friday morning.

Photojournalist Brendan Gutenschwager captured footage of protesters outside NYU’s John A. Paulson Center, Bobst Library, and The New School’s University Center on Friday afternoon.

According to a flyerprotesters picketing at NYU are calling for “amnesty for all students, faculty, and graduate workers involved in the encampment,” they want “cops off our campus,” and demand the NYU administration “substantially negotiate with students over their demands for disclosure, divestment, and an academic boycott of Israel.” Credit: Brendan Gutenschwager via Storyful
