Dumsor: Mahama is the only president to oversee ‘dum dum’ for 4 years – Opoku Prempeh

The Minister of Energy, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has once again criticized former President John Mahama over the erratic power outages that occurred during his administration.

At the time, he jokingly referred to the phenomenon as “dum dum,” a play on the local term for power outages, known as “dumsor.”

This criticism comes amid a resurgence of electricity supply issues, which has become a cause of concern among Ghanaians.

This issue arose during the session of Parliament’s Government Assurance Committee on May 3, 2024.

As part of his response, the Minister responded that “we have moved beyond the era in which we had 72 to 96 days of light off and six hours of light on. We are the era of ‘dum sie sie’ which is profoundly different from dumsor.” .

He explained that during former President John Mahama’s tenure, a major feature was erratic power supply, but during this period the case was different.

“The way Dumsor was inflicted on Ghanaians only happened as characterized by the government of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama.

“He is the only president of whom there is evidence that during the four years that he reigned, during the four years that he governed, during the four years that he governed dum dum dum,” he added.

Addressing the committee members, Dr Opoku Prempeh insisted that the erratic power supply the country was experiencing was not “dumsor” but “dum sie sie”.

According to him, Mr Mahama’s version was much more erratic because there was not enough power to keep the lights on constantly.

However, “dum sie sie” implies that the lights are turned off so that maintenance work and other activities within the energy sector can be carried out.
