City police among dead as drowning cases rise

The body of a senior police officer is among those recovered in several regions of the country in fresh drowning cases.

The body of Chief Inspector Cyprian Walunya Kasili, traffic boss in Ruai, was found in the Kware River along Kangundo Road on Wednesday night.

Kasili was trapped in his car, which had been swept away while he was driving back to his home on the Lowland estate in the Kware area. Locals helped recover the body.

Several bodies have also been recovered in separate incidents across the country.

In the Kamulu area of ​​Nairobi, police found the body of a 53-year-old man who had drowned in a stream that flows into the Athi River.

A man suspected of drowning was pulled from a pool of water in Githurai, while the body of a woman was found in the Nairobi River in the Mwiki area of ​​Kasarani. The decomposed body was found on the river bank and police believe it was washed there by floodwaters.

In the Tala area of ​​Machakos, a 55-year-old woman and her 14-year-old son died after a latrine in which they were taking shelter collapsed. Police said the incident occurred on Wednesday in Ngonda area.

The body of a man was found in a ditch that forms part of a stream running through Ibacho, in the Isabakwa area of ​​Kisii County.

The body of a 12-year-old boy was found floating in the Kisiriri River after drowning in Rumuruti, Laikipia County, while another four-year-old boy was recovered in the Huruma area after being swept downstream in the Mathare River. Police said the body was found in the Madoya area.

In the Malivani area of ​​Makueni, the body of a 63-year-old man was recovered from a stream after drowning. He was identified as John Mwaluko and had attended a funeral but did not return home.

A dam in Msambweni, Kwale, claimed the life of a 13-year-old boy. The incident occurred at the Maridzani Dam in the Nganja area, where the Milalani Primary School pupil had gone swimming with his friends.

A quarry collapsed in the Pala area killing a 22-year-old man in Ndhiwa, Homabay. The police established that the man was digging the quarry when it collapsed due to humidity.

The numbers are expected to rise, police say, as raging waters wreak havoc. So far, nearly 200 people have died, thousands have been displaced and more than 100 have been reported missing.
