Australia: Three Irishmen charged with theft of €600,000

Three Irish people have been charged in Australia in connection with a theft worth 1 million Australian dollars (600,000 euros).

The men, aged 19, 24 and 25, allegedly stole items including cash, jewelery and designer handbags.

In a statement, Victoria Police said the trio were “allegedly responsible for more than 60 residential burglaries” in suburban Melbourne.

“The majority of these crimes occurred while the occupants were away from their homes,” the statement said.

“After breaking into the homes, the trio allegedly used cleaning products in an attempt to cover their tracks.”

The three men will appear in the Melbourne Magistrates Court tomorrow.

“Your home should be your sanctuary – Victoria Police simply will not tolerate anyone trying to enter another person’s home and take what is not theirs,” Detective Sergeant Brendon Pollock said.

“We will continue to attack serious and organized criminal groups, no matter where they are from.”

There are around 27,000 young Irish people in Australia on temporary visas.
