Tottenham vs Chelsea player ratings: Van de Ven good but Sarr, Bissouma and Son poor in defeat

Tottenham missed a golden opportunity to increase the pressure on Aston Villa in fourth place after losing 2-0 to Chelsea. Second best over 90 minutes, Spurs’ woeful record at Stamford Bridge continues after winning just one home game against their rivals in the Premier League era.

Following last weekend’s 3-2 defeat to Arsenal, Ange Postecoglou made a total of five changes to his Tottenham team to face the Blues. Emerson Royal, Yves Bissouma, Pape Matar Sarr, Brennan Johnson and Richarlison made the team, with James Maddison a notable omission from the starting XI.

Elsewhere, Spurs youngster Mikey Moore was named on the bench and Postecoglou was unable to call up Ben Davies and Timo Werner due to injury. Lucky not to trail 1-0 early on after Micky van de Ven cleared a Nicolas Jackson attempt off the line, Tottenham conceded in the 24th minute when Trevoh Chalobah headed in a Conor Gallagher free-kick.

Spurs had really struggled to create meaningful scoring opportunities, but really should have equalized shortly before half-time when Cristian Romero headed a Pedro Porro free-kick just wide of the target. Tottenham were much better after the restart but did little to test Djordje Petrovic in the Chelsea goal.

Unable to restore parity, Chelsea made them pay when Jackson headed in from close range after Cole Palmer’s free kick rattled the crossbar and bounced kindly for him. Here’s how we rate the Spurs team in the match in west London:

Guglielmo Vicario

A vital touch for Nicolas Jackson’s effort in the opening minutes, but he had very little to do afterwards despite Chelsea’s dominance. 5

Pedro Porro
