The Senate confirms the minimum age requirement for admission to universities

The Nigerian Senate has made it clear that statements regarding the possible increase of the age limit to 18 were individual views.

The Senate highlighted that any adjustment to the age limit would require appropriate legislative procedures, whether they involve lowering or increasing the limit.

This was made known by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Adeyemi Adaramodu, in an interview with journalists on Wednesday.

Recall that last week, Prof. Tahir Mamman, Minister of Education, stated that the government is thinking about changing the minimum age to enter universities to 18 years.

“Comments on the minimum age of admission are not a law,” said the legislator.

“So it’s just an opinion. It is not a law. When the Senate resumes, whoever wants to take that out to turn it into law will now bring it in and then the procedures will be done.

“You can bring anything in the form of a bill. When you bring it, there will be a public hearing.

“All interested parties will sit down and talk about it. Parents, teachers, legislators, civil society organizations and even foreign organizations.

“We will sit down and talk. Even if they say the minimum age should be 30 or 12, we will all discuss it in an open forum. Therefore, it remains a comment that cannot be considered law.”
