86 rooms where tenants paid N250,000 a year discovered under Lagos bridge

Lagos State authorities have discovered a network of makeshift apartments under the Dolphin Estate Bridge in the Ikoyi Intellectual Zone.

Tenants reportedly paid N250,000 a year for accommodation in the apartments.

According to the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, a total of 86 divided rooms, ranging in size from 10×10 to 12×10, were discovered under the bridge.

These rooms, along with a container used for illicit activities, were removed by the police team of the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources.

Wahab revealed this in a post via X along with videos documenting the evacuation and dismantling of the structures beneath the bridge.

“A total of 86 rooms, divided into 10×10 and 12×10, and a container used for different illegal activities were discovered under the Dolphin Estate bridge,” Wahab wrote.

Meanwhile, Kunle Rotimi-Akodu, Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, confirmed the eviction of the illegal occupants from under the bridge.

Rotimi-Akodu highlighted the environmental violations and illegal settlements that led to the eviction, carried out by officials of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), commonly known as KAI.

“Squatters living under the bridge leading from inside Dolphin Estate, Ikoyi, were evicted today, Tuesday, April 30, 2024 by officials of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps LAGESC (also known as KAI),” he stated. Rotimi-Akodu.

He further revealed that 23 people were arrested during the eviction process, and emphasized that the law would be enforced to address such violations.
