After speaking with OpenAI and Google about their AI models, it seems that Apple could be close to choosing an AI technology partner for the iPhone.

According to a Bloomberg report, Apple has “renewed” talks with OpenAI to use the startup’s technology to power new AI features coming to future iPhones. Apple and OpenAI had talks earlier this year, but they broke up and Apple began talking to Google.

Now, Apple could be settling down. Talks are apparently quite advanced, Bloomberg says, citing “people familiar with the matter,” as Apple and OpenAI have been discussing the terms of an actual deal.

Apple has plenty of researchers working on the company’s AI models, but they don’t seem ready to be the star of the show, so the company is looking for outside help.

The next big iPhone update, iOS 18, will likely be announced during Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference, which begins June 10. If Apple signs a deal with OpenAI, we’ll probably know at that point.

It’s entirely possible that Apple won’t go with OpenAI, but that’s apparently the direction the company is leaning in right now, at least according to anonymous sources. It’s worth noting that OpenAI’s ChatGPT app arrived on iPhone about two months before coming to Android.

Apple hasn’t officially announced any AI features for the iPhone, but if you look at the Pixel 8 Pro or the Galaxy S24, you can get an idea of what the new features might be: generative AI photo editing, voice memo transcription, web page summary, text generation, custom wallpapers, etc.

There are no details on which iPhone models the new AI might be available on, but if Apple follows its competitors, the features will likely debut on the newest model and slowly roll out to other models.
