Yishun Industrial Complex Clash: Tenant accuses neighbor of hitting truck and blocking escape route in case of fire, Singapore News

For the past two months, a man surnamed Wang has been bothered by his neighbor who was allegedly playing loud music.

Wang, who runs a storage business on the third floor of the YS-One industrial building in Yishun, told Lianhe Zaobao that the noise from his neighbor, an events company, caused inconvenience to him and his customers.

According to him, the events company has been leaving its products on the common path for three years. They also stack their items in the common area, blocking access to the fire extinguisher and the escape route in case of a fire.

“I have to tell them to move their truck every time I use the driveway, which is very problematic.

“We also sell eyelash extension products and customers cannot enter my unit (because their truck is in the way). This is affecting my business,” Wang said.

Tenants’ discontent increased on January 31, when Wang and his neighbor had a disagreement because the latter was unloading goods and blocking the road. He called the police for help.

Since then, his neighbor has been playing loud music with the speakers facing his unit, Wang said.

Despite making several complaints to the building management and the police, Wang said the situation did not improve.

A neighbor hit his truck with hammers

In addition to the noise, Wang told Zaobao that on April 8, a staff member from the event company used two hammers to hit his truck.

CCTV footage showed a man wearing a green T-shirt and holding two hammers walking through the car park. The man was also seen using hammers to hit the iron railings near Wang’s unit, as if he was trying to intimidate the occupants.

Frightened by the man’s actions, Wang called the police once again.

“As far as I know, my staff told him to stop making noise, but he replied saying that this is an industrial building and not a residential area, so noise is allowed.

“When the police arrived, he returned to his unit and refused to respond.”

When interviewed, an event company employee surnamed Lin said that her colleagues had the habit of listening to music at work.

But there was never any intention to cause a disturbance, the 58-year-old said.

Since the industrial building was already noisy, Lin didn’t think that the music would affect Wang.

“We don’t want to create problems, making money is more important,” he said.

As for items in the common area, Lin said they are only left outside during inventory.

“We did not leave the items there for long, we have been careful since the authorities notified us.”

In response to Zaobao’s queries, a spokesperson for JTC Corporation confirmed that they received feedback from a tenant about noise nuisance and unauthorized storage of items in the building.

The spokesperson said they have reminded tenants to reduce their noise levels and stay within the limits permitted by the National Environment Agency.

They added that they are also working with the Singapore Civil Defense Force (SCDF) to ensure a safe working environment for all tenants.

The SCDF told Zaobao that they received a report of a fire safety violation involving the unauthorized storage of items in the common area of the YS-One building.

They are working with JTC Corporation to persuade the tenant to rectify the problem.
