Two armed robbery suspects shot to death by police during ‘indications’

A third suspect, Jerry Arnold Gumbo, 48, of Maphisa, is in police custody.

The report says that at around 2am on March 21, Moyo and Sibanda, armed with a pistol and an electric shock stun gun, ambushed Khami prison guards and robbed them of an assault rifle. AK-47.

The men then allegedly set out to rob stores and steal vehicles.

On March 23, Moyo and Sibanda are alleged to have robbed the Meat Company in the suburb of Njube of US$1,800 and R1,400 from the cash register.

On April 2, they boarded a Honda Fit bound for Pumula in Nkulumane before pulling out a gun and allegedly robbing Udin Nyoni of the vehicle and $60 in cash.

On the same day, Moyo and Sibanda, allegedly armed with an AK47 and a pistol, accosted FMG Wholesale staff in central Bulawayo. They forced the workers to open the cash register and emptied it of $780.

On April 3, teacher Yedwa Ncube from Old Lobengula arrived home shortly after 8 pm and parked in front of her house before opening the door. Moyo and Sibanda allegedly appeared from the dark and pulled out weapons before stealing his vehicle and two phones.

On April 4, Sibanda and Moyo allegedly robbed three illegal foreign currency traders, Siphilile Mabhena, Vusile Moyo and Mlungisi Sigauke, at the Nkulumane Complex.

Sibanda and Moyo allegedly approached them armed with an AK47 and a pistol and demanded cash. The trio were robbed of R1,000, US$1,800 and US$1,400 respectively.

On April 18, Moyo and Sibanda robbed Mlungisi Sigauke of old Lobengula, who had just parked in front of his house at 7pm. The suspects suddenly emerged and forced Sigauke to hand over the keys to his unmarked vehicle at gunpoint. The two left at high speed.

Two days later, on April 20, Moyo and Sibanda allegedly swooped on Maphisa Post Office and ordered Ernest Dube to open the safe at gunpoint. They took $2,240 from the safe.

According to the police report, detectives raided Moyo’s residence at Nkulumane 11 on April 26 after receiving a tip that he had a gun.

After his arrest, police recovered an AK47 rifle with eight bullets and a black pellet gun. Two Bao-Feng portable communication radios were also recovered.

Moyo allegedly implicated Sibanda in all the robberies and the third suspect, Gumbo, only in the Maphisa Post Office robbery.

Sibanda and Gumbo were arrested at their rural homes without incident.

On April 26, Moyo and Sibanda took police to Khami Dam, where they said they had hidden two weapons. Police recovered an FN Browning pistol and a Taurus revolver. Read the police report:

Suddenly, the accused became violent in an attempt to disarm one of the police officers with his AK47 rifle. Subsequently, alerted police officers shot them and they suffered gunshot wounds to the back. They were rushed to United Bulawayo Hospitals, where they died on admission.

According ZimLiveMoyo and Sibanda were ex-convicts released from Khami Prison in 2022 and February 2024 respectively.

The killing of the suspects in police custody is the latest in a string of similar incidents that have led to accusations that police are involved in extrajudicial killings.

However, in all incidents, police defended their conduct, saying they were protecting themselves and denied summarily executing the suspects.
